Dalarna County's oldest town by official charter — granted in 1459 — Hedemora is a pocket-sized Swedish settlement that still carries the formal designation of city for historical reasons. Its sole surviving medieval structure is Hedemora kyrka, built in the late 13th or early 14th century. The town was a regional market and transit point for mining products in the 16th century, and later became known internationally for the marine diesel engines produced by Hedemora Diesel, fitted in submarines for the Royal Australian Navy and the Republic of Singapore Navy.
