Known in the Middle Ages as the Pearl of Khorasan, Herat is a large city in western Afghanistan whose Timurid-era glory is compared to Florence as a center of cultural and intellectual life. The Great Mosque, the Herat Citadel, and the Musalla Complex survive from that period. Situated in the fertile Hari River valley with the Paropamisus Mountains to the north, the city has been a Silk Road crossroads since Avestan times and was traditionally known for its wine. A UNESCO World Heritage listing was announced in 2021.
