A city in northern Vietnam near the Đà River, Hòa Bình is the provincial capital of Hòa Bình Province and sits close to the mountains southwest of Hanoi. The Hòa Bình Dam, built with Soviet financing and expertise, was the largest hydroelectric dam in Vietnam and Southeast Asia for decades after its completion. The city also saw significant fighting during the First Indochina War, with the Battle of Hòa Bình unfolding in the area between 1951 and 1952.
