Hoeryong, a city in North Korea's North Hamgyong Province, sits on the Tumen River opposite Jilin Province in China, in mountain terrain near the border. It is known as the birthplace of Kim Jong Suk — mother of Kim Jong Il and first wife of Kim Il Sung — commemorated by the Hoeryong Revolutionary Site. The former Kwalliso No. 22 concentration camp was located a short distance from the city.
