Hpa-An
Myanmar (Burma)
Hpa-An, the capital of Myanmar's Kayin State (Karen State) in the southeast of the country, sits on the Thanlwin River near mountains and caves, including Kawgun Cave to the east and Bayingyi Cave to the west. The town centre is walkable and has a good spread of cafés and restaurants. The area only became relatively peaceful following a ceasefire in 2012, and tourism has grown since the late 2010s.
