A riverside town on the northern bank of the Biobío River, Hualqui sits within the Greater Concepción area while retaining a rural character. Its history stretches back to 1577, when the Royal Governor of Chile Rodrigo de Quiroga built a tiny fort here, and a formal town — San Juan Bautista de Gualqui — was established in 1756. The town later served as capital of the Corregimiento de Puchacay.
