This small Finnish municipality in the Kainuu region hosts the World Championships in swamp football each year, drawing competitors to one of the country's most sparsely populated landscapes. Settlement here dates back to around 8000 BCE, and the area marks the southernmost reindeer-herding zone in Finland. During the Continuation War, a narrow-gauge railway known as the "Death Railway" was built through the municipality between 1942 and 1944.
