Iguala de la Independencia, a city in the Mexican state of Guerrero set in a valley ringed by mountains, is where the first Mexican flag was sewn in 1821, when tailor José Magdaleno Ocampo crafted it on the orders of Agustín de Iturbide following the proclamation of the Plan de Iguala. The city's Museo del Lábaro Patrio holds a collection of flags and standards representing Mexico through its history, and the downtown cathedral is surrounded by tamarind trees that give the city its nickname, "city of tamarinds."
