Ilomantsi

Finland

Ilomantsi, in Finland's North Karelia region, holds the easternmost point of both Finland and the continental European Union, near the village of Hattuvaara. The municipality is home to Finland's largest Orthodox community by proportion — a tradition more than 500 years old — and its largest wooden Orthodox church, dedicated to the prophet Elijah. Two national parks, Petkeljärvi and Patvinsuo, lie within its largely forested and lake-dotted landscape, and the area saw significant fighting in both the Winter War and the Continuation War.
