This large city in northern Jordan with a walkable centre dense with cafés, restaurants, and historic churches, Irbid is the capital of its governorate and the country's third-largest city. Its origins trace to the Roman era, when it occupied a central position among the ten cities of the Decapolis league, and it later became a significant centre during the early Islamic conquests. Yarmouk University's Hussein bin Talal Library is among the largest in the Middle East.
