Town on the Istra River in Moscow Oblast, with a walkable centre, riverside setting, and scenic surrounds on the southern slopes of the Klin-Dmitrov Ridge. Formerly called Voskresensk until 1929, Istra sits on the Moscow–Riga railway line roughly an hour west of the capital, making it a practical base for exploring the wider region. It holds the status of a settlement of military valor.
