The Itaipu Binacional hydroelectric dam, straddling the Paraná River on the Paraguay–Brazil border near Hernandarias, has been one of the world's largest power stations since it began operating in 1984. Its reservoir stretches roughly 200 km and the dam complex is open to visitors, sitting within reach of the Iguazú region's wider UNESCO-listed natural attractions. The construction submerged the Guairá Falls, though remnants can appear when water levels drop.
