Jakobstad
Finland
Jakobstad, on Finland's Gulf of Bothnia coast, is the birthplace of national poet J. L. Runeberg, celebrated each year with a literature-focused Runeberg Week. The town's centre is laid out with wide streets and esplanades, and its landmarks include the Pedersöre Church, built in the 1520s, and the Strengberg tobacco factory, whose clock tower holds the largest bell in the Nordic countries. Founded in 1652 by Ebba Brahe, it grew into Finland's largest shipbuilder by the late 18th century. The town is officially bilingual in Finnish and Swedish.
