This large port city on the Batang Hari River — the longest river in Sumatra — Jambi is the provincial capital of Jambi province and a centre of oil and rubber production. The Gentala Arasy pedestrian bridge, Indonesia's first S-shaped suspension footbridge over a river, connects the two banks of the city. Nearby, a short drive away, lie the Muaro Jambi Temple Compounds, ruins of an ancient city from the Srivijaya kingdom era.
