Janakpur Dham, the capital of Nepal's Madhesh Province, is the country's central hub for Maithili language and culture, and draws religious visitors as the city traditionally identified as the birthplace of the Hindu deity Sita and the capital of the ancient Videha kingdom — a designation made in the early 18th century, though without archaeological backing. The walkable centre has a concentration of temples and religious sites, and a rail link connects the city to Jainagar across the border in India.
