Johnston
U.S. Outlying Islands
Johnston Atoll, a remote U.S. territory in the central Pacific roughly a third of the way between Hawaii and the Marshall Islands, is closed to the public. The atoll spent much of the 20th century as a military site used for nuclear and biological weapons testing, chemical weapons storage, and Agent Orange disposal, leaving significant environmental contamination that was remediated by 2004. Today it functions as a National Wildlife Refuge and part of the Pacific Islands Heritage Marine National Monument, accessible only with authorization from the U.S. Air Force and a special permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
