Kabwe
Zambia
Kabwe, the capital of Zambia's Central Province, carries a claim as the birthplace of Zambian politics, having served as a significant political centre during the colonial era. Founded in 1902 following the discovery of lead and zinc deposits — and known as Broken Hill until 1966 — it is today a transportation and agricultural hub and the headquarters of Zambia Railways. A UN report from 2022 identified the city as severely contaminated with lead and other toxins, with documented effects on children's health.
