Sitting on the south shore of the Gulf of İzmit with ferry connections to İzmit and Hereke across the water, Karamürsel takes its name from the founder of the Ottoman navy, who established the empire's first sea outlet here in 1323. The town's waterfront is lined with fish restaurants, and the surrounding area is known for orchards of cherry, plum, peach, pear, and fig, along with olive cultivation. A surviving chimney from an Ottoman-era textile factory still stands in the district.
