This remote Pamir town serves as the administrative centre of Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, sitting high in the mountains where the Gund River meets the Panj. A compact centre holds a concentration of cafés and restaurants, and the surrounding peaks and rivers are within easy reach on foot. Road connections link it to Dushanbe, Osh in Kyrgyzstan, and the Chinese border via the Murghab route.
