Kindu
Congo - Kinshasa
Kindu is the provincial capital of Maniema in the Democratic Republic of Congo, set on the Lualaba River — part of the Congo River system — where it has historically served as an important inland port. The city was formerly known as Kindu Port-Empain, named after the Belgian baron Édouard Louis Joseph Empain. A rail link connects it to the mining centres of Kalemie, Kamina, and Kananga to the south, and an airport serves the wider region.
