Kokshetau

Founded as a military fortress in 1824 on the southern shore of Lake Kopa, Kokshetau is a mid-sized city in northern Kazakhstan and the capital of Akmola Region, named after the nearby Mount Kokshe. The city serves as a gateway to Burabay National Park, a nature and spa destination roughly 70 km away, and to the Zerendi area. Museums covering regional history, literature, and art are spread across the city, which was named Kazakhstan's City of Culture for 2021 and has a long-established multiethnic population.
