Kolhapur
Kolhapur · India
Kolhapur, a large city on the banks of the Panchganga River in southern Maharashtra, is known across India for its Kolhapuri chappal — handcrafted braided leather slippers that received a Geographical Indication designation in 2019 — and for its distinctive regional cuisine. Long called "Dakshin Kashi" (Kashi of the South) for the antiquity of its Mahalaxmi shrine, the city was a princely state under the Maratha Confederacy before Indian independence and remains a significant centre for the Marathi film industry.
