Korti
Sudan
Korti, a town in Sudan's Northern State within Merowi province, carries a layered military history: it was the site of the Battle of Korti between Ismail ibn Muhammad Ali Pasha and local tribal forces during the early Turkish-Egyptian invasion of Sudan, and later served as the forward base and supply centre for Lord Wolseley's Gordon Relief Expedition, the launching point for the crossing of the Bayuda Desert toward Khartoum. The town also has a long commercial tradition and sits within reach of the Nile and the wider region's UNESCO World Heritage sites.
