This Moroccan city in Larache Province whose name translates as "the big castle," Ksar el-Kebir sits beside the Loukous River and has a walkable centre with a solid spread of cafés and restaurants. The city is historically associated with the 1578 Battle of Wadi al-Makhazin — also called the Battle of the Three Kings — in which Morocco repelled a Portuguese invasion, and it remains one of the country's most productive agricultural regions, supplying a significant share of Morocco's sugar.
