Once the colonial capital of Pahang state, Kuala Lipis held that role for most of the British period before Kuantan took over in 1955. The town sits deep in the jungles of Pahang, in mountain terrain at a river confluence, and has drawn independent travellers looking for a quieter, less-visited corner of peninsular Malaysia's interior.
