Kukës
Albania
A compact town in northeastern Albania set between Lake Fierza and the Albanian Alps, Kukës sits at the edge of the Kosovo border with a centre of cafés and restaurants and mountain terrain suited to walking and fishing. The town gained international attention in 1999 when it sheltered hundreds of thousands of Kosovan refugees fleeing the conflict, a role that earned it a Nobel Peace Prize nomination in 2000.
