Kunduz, in northern Afghanistan, was once the capital of the Hephthalite empire for around 110 years and today serves as the largest city in the country's northeast. Situated in the historical Tokharistan region of Bactria, it sits near the confluence of the Kunduz and Khanabad rivers, with mountains visible from the city. A road hub connecting Kabul, Mazar-i-Sharif, and Badakhshan, it is also a crossing point for travellers entering Afghanistan from Tajikistan via Sher Khan Bandar.
