The capital of Kuwait and a centre of modern Arab culture in the Gulf — designated Islamic Capital of Culture in 2016 — Kuwait City grew rapidly after oil was discovered in 1934 and now holds the Kuwait Towers, landmark water reservoirs built in 1975 and opened in 1979, alongside the National Museum, the Grand Mosque completed in 1986, and the historic Mubarakiya market. Nearby Failaka Island preserves ancient Greek archaeological remains.
