This spa town and gateway to hiking and skiing on Osogovo Mountain in far-western Bulgaria, Kyustendil sits near the borders of Serbia and North Macedonia and has a compact centre with a concentration of cafés and restaurants. The surrounding region is known for its fruit orchards. The town has a long history, passing through Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, Bulgarian, Serbian, and Ottoman hands before joining an independent Bulgarian state in 1878.
