Founded by Christopher Columbus in 1494 during his Second Voyage, La Isabela in Puerto Plata province is the first permanent European settlement established in the Americas, predated only by the short-lived Fort Navidad. Its ruins are preserved within Parque Nacional Histórico La Isabela, making this coastal site in the Dominican Republic one of the most historically significant places in the Western Hemisphere.
