Laja, a town in Bolivia's La Paz Department, holds a specific place in South American history: the city of Nuestra Señora de La Paz was originally founded here in 1548 by the Spanish captain Alonso de Mendoza, before being relocated three days later to the valley of Chuquiago, where La Paz stands today. The town sits at high elevation on the Altiplano, close to mountains and within reach of several UNESCO World Heritage sites in the wider region.
