Larabanga
Ghana
Larabanga's whitewashed adobe mosque, said to date from 1421 and reputed to be Ghana's oldest, draws visitors to this tiny town in the Savannah Region. Built during the height of the trans-Saharan trade, the mosque houses a copy of the Qur'an nearly as old and is sometimes called the Mecca of West Africa. The town is also known for a Mystic Stone and patterned vernacular architecture, and serves as the gateway to Mole National Park.
