Coastal city in Bahia, just a short distance from Salvador, Lauro de Freitas sits on the northern shore of the metropolitan region with direct access to the Atlantic. The wider area is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites. Once a district of Salvador known as Santo Amaro de Ipitanga, it became an independent municipality in 1962 and was renamed in honour of the engineer and politician Lauro Farani Pedreira de Freitas, who spent most of his life there.
