Founded by Phoenicians on the Río Piedras and later settled by Romans and Arabs, Lepe is an Andalusian town near the Portuguese border with a compact centre of cafés and restaurants and around 24 kilometres of Atlantic coastline. Its beaches — La Antilla, Santa Pura, Nueva Umbría, and the eastern stretch of Islantilla — draw summer visitors, while the Marismas del Río Piedras nature reserve and the fishing port of El Terrón add variety beyond the sand.
