Copper-mining city in southeastern DR Congo, founded in 1916–1917 when the local mines began production and later named Jadotville in honour of engineer Jean Jadot before reverting to its current name in 1971. Likasi holds a mineralogical museum with a collection of some 600 stone samples, and nearby Lake Tshangalele — a reservoir on the Lufira river — offers a natural attraction a short drive away. The Trans-African Highway 9, running between Beira and Lobito, passes through the city.
