Lilienfeld
Austria
Lilienfeld Abbey anchors this little Lower Austrian town in the Traisen River valley, south of St. Pölten. Just beyond the abbey, a chair lift rises to the summit of Muckenkogel in the Gutenstein Alps — the mountain where, on 19 March 1905, Czech-born ski pioneer Mathias Zdarsky won the first official Alpine ski race. The wider region is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites, and the town sits at the foot of mountain terrain with scenic viewpoints above.
