Limón
Limón · Costa Rica
Costa Rica's main Caribbean port since the 19th century, Puerto Limón sits on the Caribbean coast with a compact centre of cafés, restaurants, and historic churches. Founded in 1854, it is the country's only planned city built in that era, and holds cultural significance as a landing point during Christopher Columbus's fourth voyage in 1502. The city is one of Costa Rica's most Afro-Caribbean communities, shaped by Jamaican workers who arrived to build the Atlantic railroad, and Limonese Creole is spoken alongside Spanish. Visitors should be aware of elevated crime levels linked to the port's role in regional drug trafficking.
