Lokoja sits where the Niger and Benue rivers meet, making it one of Nigeria's most geographically distinctive cities and a draw for those interested in the country's colonial and commercial history. Founded in 1857 by British explorer William Baikie as a trading post on the Niger, it is the capital of Kogi State in central Nigeria.
