Norman castle built in 1948 by District Commissioner Errol Lancelot Button — reportedly designed on the back of a cigarette packet — serves as the hotel in this Eastern Province town near Zambia's border with Malawi. The castle overlooks a dam Button created by hand, now the town's water supply, where hippos once lived. Lundazi sits high above the Luangwa Valley, with a quiet border crossing to Malawi nearby.
