A small town in eastern France's Haute-Saône, Lure grew around a monastery founded in 610 by the Irish monk Saint Columbanus, and the Abbey of Lure shaped the town through eight centuries of monastic life before its dissolution during the French Revolution. Gravel extraction between 1940 and 2018 created a string of ponds that now serve as leisure areas for fishing, cycling, and water activities. The town is also known as the birthplace of Sapeur Camember, one of the earliest characters in French comics.
