Lusambo
Congo - Kinshasa
Lusambo, the provincial capital of Sankuru in the Democratic Republic of Congo, sits on the Sankuru River near its confluence with the Lubi River. Founded in April 1890 as a Belgian military base by Paul Le Marinel, it quickly became one of the most significant military posts of the Congo Free State. The town saw renewed conflict during the Second Congo War in 1999, when Zimbabwean troops were surrounded nearby. Lusambo Airport connects it to the wider region.
