Maglaj
Bosnia & Herzegovina
Little town in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina where the Bosna River meets mountain terrain, Maglaj is anchored by a medieval fortress, the Gradina, that overlooks the valley. The 1560 Jusuf-Pasha Mosque, known as the Kuršumlija, and two historic churches — St. Leopold's and St. Ilija's, built in 1909 — add to a compact historic centre. The town's first recorded mention names it directly by its fortress: "Sub castro nostro Maglay."
