The Château de Maintenon, built across several centuries from the 12th to the 18th and enlarged by Madame de Maintenon with gardens laid out by Le Nôtre, anchors this small town on the Eure river in Eure-et-Loir. The estate's grounds include a canal and a 17th-century aqueduct — intended to carry water to Versailles — that remains a listed monument. The town sits within the Paris metropolitan area, a short drive southwest of the capital, with cafés and restaurants in its compact centre.
