Malabo sits on the northern coast of Bioko Island with a walkable grid-plan centre full of cafés and restaurants, its low-rise skyline blending colonial-era architecture with post-independence construction. The oldest city in Equatorial Guinea, it was founded by the British as Port Clarence, later renamed Santa Isabel under Spanish rule, and took its current name in 1973. Until early 2026 it served as the country's capital, and its pedestrianised streets and green spaces reflect an urban ambition that dates to the colonial period.
