This coastal city on the Gulf of Guacanayabo in eastern Cuba's Granma Province, Manzanillo has a seafront malecón lined with ceramic-tiled walls and sculptures, backed by a walkable centre with cafés and restaurants. The area carries real historical weight: the 1604 epic poem considered the first monument of Cuban literature is set on its beaches, and the nearby Demajagua estate is where Carlos Manuel de Céspedes proclaimed Cuban independence in 1868.
