Marietta
Washington County · United States
Founded in 1788 as the first permanent U.S. settlement in the Northwest Territory, Marietta sits at the confluence of the Muskingum and Ohio Rivers in southeastern Ohio, with a café and restaurant scene that outpaces the town's size. The city preserves the Marietta Earthworks, a Hopewell-tradition ceremonial complex more than 1,500 years old, including the Great Mound at Mound Cemetery. It was named after Marie Antoinette in recognition of French support during the American Revolution, served as an Underground Railroad station, and borders part of the Wayne National Forest.
