Maroantsetra
Madagascar
A port town on Madagascar's Bay of Antongil, Maroantsetra sits within reach of several UNESCO World Heritage sites in the wider region, with mountains visible from the waterfront. The town carries a long history: it was here that the Betsimisaraka people were unified under Ratsimilaho in the 18th century, and the bay was a known stop for early Anglo-American pirates sailing the Indian Ocean in the 1680s. The town was formerly known as Louisbourg and now serves as the capital of Ambatosoa, Madagascar's newest administrative region.
