Maroneia
Ροδόπη · Greece
Vineyards have defined Maroneia since Homeric times — this is the wine said to have intoxicated the Cyclops Polyphemus in the Odyssey — and the slopes of Mount Ismarus above the Thracian Sea still carry the tradition, with ancient rock-cut wine presses surviving on the hillside. The modest coastal village in Rhodope, southeastern Greece, sits close to the ruins of its ancient namesake city and offers a handful of cafés, restaurants, and historic churches for its size.
