Marostica

Every two years, on the second weekend of September in even-numbered years, Marostica's central square fills with costumed performers re-enacting a live chess match — a tradition running since 1923 and said to echo a 1454 event, earning the town the nickname "city of chess." The medieval walls, upper and lower castles, and a protected geographical indication cherry variety round out a compact Vicenza-province town with a genuine café scene and deep wine-country surroundings.
