Marracuene
Mozambique
Modest town on the right bank of the Incomati River, a short drive north of Maputo, Marracuene is known for a nearby camping park and carries a significant place in Mozambican history: on 2 February 1895, Ronga forces under the young prince Zixaxa clashed with a Portuguese column here in the Battle of Marracuene — also called Gwaza Muthine — a confrontation remembered for the Portuguese "square" formation that decided the outcome. The town was formerly known as Vila Luísa during the colonial period.
